Group Background:
Beth Hill Ross/President and Founder, always worked with
animals, always loved horses, rescue seems to be my thing. I have
always been around horses, owned my first horse in college,
boyfriend bought it for me. (: Took lessons for years as a
kid. Gammy Num Num on the web site sparked the rescue thing
again. NEER has been in operation since '05... and we have directly
and indirectly helped hundreds of horses in that time.
How are Horses Acquired:
Abuse, neglect and slaughter... ): People are
unloading their horses left and right because the economy is so
bad! We focus on New England, but will do what's needed, where
ever, and we network with rescues all up and down the east coast. I
have received over 7 emails this week for horses that need to be
surrendered by owners that can't afford them. ): Yes, people can
contact me... fatoldfarmwife@verizon.net And we rely on fosters,
since we have no ONE facility.
How the Horses Rehabilitated:
We do whatever it takes... food, handling, training,
etc. We have many volunteers who help, including trainers. All
horses receive neccessary vet, farrier, and dental care, either
before being fostered/adopted, or during. We pull slaughterbound
horses and count on fosters to get the neccessary care updated.
Group Specialties:
We focus on the old and unwanted.
We have a message board...
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/NewEnglandEquineRescues
CONSTANT fundraising, see web site, we have a pet psychic reading
coming up in March and an Expo in April. gracelets, jewelry,
cookbooks, raffles, auctions, candles and books
Rewards:
I am a certified RIDART volunteer... disaster training.
Typical Day at the Facility:
All different fosters, all different days. I do most of
my work on the computer... management/networking/recruitment/public
relations/etc.
Personal hours?? WAY TOO MANY!!! All volunteer. Unending!! Still
feels like we haven't made a dent. ):
30-70 hours weekly?
Primary responsibility is to my family and animals..
Horses Available:
Depends on the month... 1 in a month, 1 out a month, if
we are lucky! Adopted and adoptables are on the web site.
Adoption Procedures:
Application... vet/farrier/dentist refs. Extensive
questioning. Police checks, ACO, SPCA, professional ref. Pics
emailed. Liability release. Farm check. References ARE checked carefully!
Suitable housing, fencing, paddock, no solo horses, no barbed wire,
we do not like high tensile fencing. Place must be reasonably
clean, must be safe, etc.
Testimonials:

Donations & Local Volunteers:
No minimum hourly commitment, we take what we can get. (:
We need transport, help with fundraisers, bodies at some things, on
line help, physical help, grant writing, fosters, training, etc.
Donations: online, PayPal, check, by mail... every way.
Volunteers... 50+
Comments:
Somebody who is equipped to adopt... physically,
emotionally and financially.
If you see a horse being abused or neglected, call the local police,
animal control officer, SPCA, rescue, or ME! (: And if that doesn't
work, call the media, get people to focus on the abused animal... it
forces the owner to change.
Squeaky wheel... don't stop until SOMEthing is done!. |
